Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, includes gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and Lap-Band® procedures for the surgical treatment of overweight and obesity. The goal of these procedures – dramatic weight loss – is achieved by reducing the size of the patient’s stomach using an im...

Minimally invasive surgery, or MIS, includes gallbladder surgery; removal of the spleen, or splenectomy; removal of an adrenal gland, or adrenalectomy; hernia surgery and hernia revision surgery; MIS thoracic surgery; robotic surgery; and anti-reflux (GERD) surgery. MIS typically involves smaller instruments such as laparoscopes and endoscopes, much smaller incisions, less damage to the body and faster recovery with less scarring. At The Surgery Group, our board-certified surgeons perform:

  • Robotic surgery has been used for greater precision in hernia, gastrointestinal, lung and colon as well as cancer care. The robotic system is ideal for treating these health issues because its movement is more efficient than a surgeon’s hands.

  • Laparoscopic surgery in the abdominal cavity is the most common form of MIS performed for gastrointestinal conditions.

  • Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery is the standard treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and laparoscopic fundoplication is the standard treatment for hiatal hernias (herniation of the stomach into the chest). In this procedure, the fundus (upper part) of the stomach is wrapped around the lower portion of the esophagus and stitched in place. This surgery prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus, preventing GERD.

  • Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, known as cholecystectomy, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder and gallstones through tiny incisions in the abdomen. Once the gallbladder is removed, the body can no longer store bile between meals, but this has little or no effect on digestion.
