Endocrine surgery typically includes surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pancreatic glands. Endocrine surgery is a highly specialized field where procedures are typically performed on these glands in the neck and near the kidneys to alter hormonal effects on the body. In almost every case, this entails the removal of a tumor that has grown on the inside or outside of an endocrine gland. The most common endocrine surgery is the removal of the thyroid gland, or thyroidectomy. Removal of the parathyroid is a parathyroidectomy and the rare removal of an adrenal gland is an adrenalectomy.

  • Thyroid gland – Located in the front of the neck, it regulates the body’s overall metabolism (the rate at which you use energy).
  • Parathyroid glands – There are four parathyroid glands located behind the thyroid, which control calcium levels throughout the body.
  • Adrenal glands – There are two adrenal glands located on the top of each kidney. They secrete adrenaline, aldosterone and cortisol.
  • Pancreas – Located behind the stomach, the pancreas is an important part of the digestive and endocrine system.
