Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, includes gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and Lap-Band® procedures for the surgical treatment of overweight and obesity. The goal of these procedures – dramatic weight loss – is achieved by reducing the size of the patient’s stomach using an implanted medical device (a gastric band or Lap-Band) through removal of part of the stomach (a sleeve gastrectomy) or by resecting and rerouting the small intestine to a smaller stomach pouch (a gastric bypass).

Long-term studies reveal that these surgical weight loss procedures can cause significant long-term weight loss as well as remission of diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors and health and overall reduction in patient mortality. Bariatric surgery is not for everyone. People who are mildly to moderately overweight are encouraged to lose weight through improved nutrition, moderate regular exercise and other lifestyle changes. The best and most likely candidates for bariatric procedures are those with a body mass index (BMI) reading above 35 or 40 with no comorbidities or a BMI of 30 to 35 with significant comorbidities.

Your doctor will gladly refer you to The Surgery Group for a consultation if you are a candidate for bariatric surgical care. And you will be glad to experience professional care in a safe, compassionate environment.
