One of the founders of The Surgery Group, Dr. Rubey has served as president of the group for the last 12 years. Dr. Rubey was born in Mobile, AL. He is married to Marie Myles Rubey and has three children, Michael, Ryan and Becca. Michael works for the Peace Corps and teaches math in Tanzania, Africa. Ryan attends college in Gainesville, Florida. He recently finished six years in the United States Marine Corps and fought in Iraq. He has a dog, Choxsie (a golden doodle). Becca teaches middle school in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Rubey has previously served in many positions at Baptist Hospital, including Cancer Liaison Physician for the American College of Surgeons, Board of Directors for Baptist Hospital, Chief of the Department of Surgery, Chief of Section of General Surgery and Chief of Trauma Service. He has extensive experience in medical-legal issues and served on the risk management committee for many years. He was the clinical coordinator at the Baptist Hospital site for a multicenter research study involving sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast cancer.

Dr. Rubey is an avid pilot and has been flying since 1963. He enjoys boating, scuba diving and reading fiction.

One of the founders of The Surgery Group, Dr. Hodnette was born in New Orleans, LA and raised in Pensacola. His father was a renowned gynecologist in Pensacola for many years. He has two brothers and one sister. He is married to Frances Z. Hodnette (Frankie) and they have four sons, William, Christopher, Jonathan and Brooks II.

Dr. Hodnette was previously President of the Medical Staff at Baptist Hospital, Chief of General Surgery at both Baptist and Sacred Heart Hospitals, and Chief of the Department of Surgery at Baptist Hospital. He is also a member of the Piedmont Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Dr. Hodnette has, at various times, been treasurer, secretary and president of the Pensacola Surgical Society.

His outside interests include sports (golf, tennis and hockey), hunting, flying, computers and boating.

Dr. Caluda joined The Surgery Group in 1998 and is a lifelong resident of northwest Florida. He is married to Dr. Shannon Caluda and has two stepchildren, Collin and Caraline. Dr. Caluda has been active in medical staff leadership in the Pensacola area through his entire career. He has served as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Gulf Breeze Hospital. At Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, he previously served as Deputy Chief of Surgery and American College of Surgeons Cancer Liaison Physician. He is expertly skilled in the laparoscopic and robotic treatment of abdominal and inguinal hernias and intestinal surgery, including colon cancer. He achieved certification by the American Board of Surgery in 1999 and has maintained continuous certification. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Other professional associations include the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Tulane Surgical Society and Pensacola Surgical Society.

John (Jack) W. Tyson, MD, FACS

Specialties: Dr. Tyson practices the entire realm of general surgery (“the skin and its contents”) with special interests in the areas of minimally invasive surgery and complex laparoscopic procedures, including but not limited to: colon resection, reflux procedures (Nissen and TIF), adrenal resection, splenectomy, cholecystectomy and hernia repair (both groin and abdominal wall). He’s very well-trained in and experienced with oncologic (cancer) surgery, including: breast, melanoma, esophageal, colon and thoracic (lung) surgeries. In addition, Dr. Tyson is an experienced and busy endoscopist performing both colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD – endoscopic evaluation of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum).

Dr. Tyson joined The Surgery Group in 2000. He was born and raised in Wallingford, PA . He is married to Tomi M. Tyson (since 1981) and has three children, Grant, Grace and Luke.

Dr. Tyson is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and has recently successfully passed his recertification exam for the second time. He is currently Chairman of the Cancer Committee at Baptist Hospital. Dr. Tyson is very active in the community and frequently is involved in theater at Pensacola Little Theater or Pensacola State College. Dr. Tyson is so thankful to live in such a beautiful locale and thoroughly enjoys our gorgeous beaches and waters. He is an avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction, particularly history. Dr. Tyson considers it a privilege and an honor to care for you.

Jeffrey L. Lord, MD, FACS

Specialties: Dr. Lord’s particular areas of interest include laparoscopic surgery for morbid obesity and gastrointestinal surgery. In addition, he has special interest in laparoscopic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and other diseases of the foregut: laparoscopic colon resection, laparoscopic adrenalectomy and splenectomy and laparoscopic hernia repair. He is board-certified in Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Lord serves as Medical Director of Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery at the Sacred Heart Institute for Surgical Weight Loss. In addition, he is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Mark Ravitch/Leon C. Hirsch Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Health System.

Dr. Lord was previously Director of Minimally Invasive General and Bariatric Surgery at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. Memberships in professional and scientific societies include the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Bariatric Surgeons (ASBS) and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Dr. Lord is also a physician teaching proctor for the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons.

Patrick T. Gatmaitan, MD, FACS

Dr. Gatmaitan has been practicing medicine for six years and joined The Surgery Group in 2009. For him, bariatric surgery is unique and fascinating – a metabolic surgery with significant effects other than weight loss. He enjoys witnessing the positive transformation in each patient over time and giving them another chance at life and health and happiness.

Dr. Gatmaitan enjoys spending time with his family and four children, two boys and twin girls.

Dr. Mark R. Onady II

Dr.  Mark R. Onady II Dr. Mark R. Onady II is committed to providing compassionate, quality healthcare. With a strong focus on minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery, he believes everyone deserves comprehensive treatment and patient-centered care.

Did you know Dr. Onady is also a chemical engineer? Between 2001 and 2004, he worked full-time through various capacities in project engineering, production engineering and marketing departments. He also completed various projects involving quality testing and field testing to boost production efficiency and process improvement.

As a medical doctor, Dr. Onady’s research experience included analyzing cine MR images obtained during sleep studies, comparing pharyngeal wall compliance between obese adolescents with sleep apnea and matched controls. He utilized the MATLAB program developed by the University of Cincinnati, Department of Aerospace Engineering.
